Zero-tolerance against infiltration: Altogether 3,518 illegal immigrants arrested in Tripura since 2022: CM

The last day of autumn session of Tripura Legislative Assembly on Tuesday witnessed heated-exchange and arguments among council of ministers and with legislators of ruling alliance Tipra-Motha in a ‘Calling Attention Notice’ over the measures being taken by the state government to stop infiltration from neighbouring Bangladesh.
The calling attention notice was raised by alliance partner Tipra-Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma on the second half of the Tuesday’s session, while Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, who is also hold the Home portfolio said that as per the Union Home Ministry’s directive, identifying, detaining, and deporting Bangladeshi infiltrators back to their own country, a Task Force has been formed for all eights districts of the state led by any additional SP level officer and altogether 129 police personnel have also been assigned for the Task Force.
He said that apart from district wise formation of Task Force, a state level Task Force has also formed with active coordination with BSF for identification of illegal immigrants and subsequent legal process for their deportation.
"The STFs are not only working against infiltration but also keeping a close vigil on potential terrorist activities, drug smuggling, fundamentalist groups and international crime," he said.
After collapsed of Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh on August 5th, 2024, an unfavorable environmental condition arises and immediately, the state government organized a high-level meeting with tackle with the situation and as per the directives of Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), strict border surveillance has been initiated to check infiltration and no-body from the neighbouring country will not allow if they try to sneak into Indian territory illegally, said Chief Minister.
The state government has also stressed over strengthening of coordination among BSF and other forces along with police intelligence agencies, said Dr Saha and added that
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha informed that as part of border security, the Union Government has instructed for deportation of infiltrators, the BSF, local police and administrative authorities are working to detect infiltrators and deport them. He emphasized that the state is fully alert in terms of maintaining law and order.
The Chief Minister further said that border security is of utmost importance. The BSF, state police, and other agencies are conducting coordinated efforts to maintain overall security. Weekly review meetings are being held at the individual district level to assess the situation.
He also said that the state government gives utmost importance to ensuring peace, stability, and public security in the state. The Chief Minister mentioned that due to infiltration, law and order could deteriorate and communal harmony may be disturbed. For this reason, coordinated actions are being taken with all concerned departments, so that infiltrators can be identified and deported promptly.
He further stated that under no circumstances would the state government delay in implementing the directives of the Union Government. There will be no negligence in this matter and the present state government was working to prevent infiltration from across the border, Dr Saha reiterated.
Meanwhile, giving detailed action against infiltration, Dr Saha said that a total of 3,518 foreign nationals, mostly Bangladeshis, were arrested in the state from 2022 to till August 31, 2025 for entering the state illegally.
He stated that 965 Bangladeshi nationals and 17 Rohingyas were arrested in 2022, 1,014 Bangladeshi and 98 Rohingyas in 2023, 947 Bangladeshi and 60 Rohingyas in 2024, and till August 3, 2025, altogether 416 Bangladeshi and Rohingyas were detained from different parts of the state. Of them, 2,739 have already been sent back to their countries, he said.
A total of 894 arrested Bangladeshis were sent back in 2022, 696 in 2023, 676 in 2024 and 441 in 2025, as of August 31, 2025, he added. He said that the state has a ‘detention’ centre at Narsingarh area of Agartala, where a total 95 foreigners are at present including Bangladeshi, Rohingyas, Nigerian and one French national.
The CM said in some areas, barbed fencing along the state's international border could not be completed due to various reasons.
He further informed the House that the state will not compromise with infiltration from across the border and his government was also concerned about the use of fake documents and taking steps to curb it.
