According to court documents, Ardestani was recruited online by Mossad and carried out assignments for the Israeli spy agency after being lured with payments and promises.
“Judicial documents and the defendant’s explicit confessions indicate that, on the orders of Mossad officers, Ardestani took photographs of specific locations and gathered information on targeted individuals, which he then passed on to the service,” the news agency reported.
Investigators said Ardestani maintained virtual contact with Mossad handlers and communicated with individuals linked to the Israeli agency inside Iran.
He was allegedly paid in cryptocurrency upon completing his missions.
Ardestani was arrested while in the process of carrying out an assignment for Mossad, the report added.
