Indian national Sarabjit Singh's killer Amir Sarfaraz shot dead in Pakistan
Unknown gunmen on Sunday (April 14, 2024) shot dead underworld don and alleged killer of Indian national Sarabjit Singh in Pakistan's Lahore city, media reports said.
Amir Sarfaraz, alias Tamba, one of Pakistan's wanted underworld dons, was attacked by motorcycle-borne assailants in the Islampura area of Lahore, India Today reported.
He was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Amir Sarfaraz was born in Lahore in 1979 and was a close associate of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) founder Hafiz Sayeed, the Indian news channel reported.
A case was filed against him and others for attacking Sarabjit Singh in a Pakistani prison.
According to reports, Sarfaraz was later acquitted by a Pakistani court due to 'lack of evidence'.
Who was Sarabjit Singh?
Indian death row prisoner in Pakistan Sarabjit Singh, 49, died of a heart attack in Lahore's Jinnah Hospital on May 2, 2013, after remaining in a coma for nearly a week following a brutal assault on him by inmates.
He was reportedly attacked by inmates with bricks and iron rods.
Singh was awarded a death sentence for spying charges and killing at least 14 Pakistani citizens in bomb blasts in the South Asian country's Punjab province in 1990.
Singh's family members and Indian authorities denied the claims.
Singh's family claimed he crossed the Indian border to reach Pakistan while farming by mistake.
During the entire tenure, Singh's sister Dalbir Singh pleaded tirelessly to secure his release from prison.
Singh's life also inspired filmmaker Omung Kumar to create the movie titled 'Sarabjit'.
Released in 2016, the movie featured Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Randeep Hooda in the lead roles.
