The remarks were made on the sidelines of US–Iran talks held in Switzerland.

The Indian reference was to his wife, Usha Vance.

Speaking at the Swiss resort of Bürgenstock after discussions with Iranian officials aimed at securing a long-term peace agreement, Vance said, as quoted by media reports:

“Since Field Marshal Asim Munir welcomed us with the (Pakistani) Prime Minister (Shehbaz Sharif) in Islamabad, I have joked that I have two very, very important people in my life.”

He added, “An Indian and a Pakistani. The Indian is my wife, and the Pakistani is Field Marshal Munir.”

The statement was made in the presence of both Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir.

The talks were reportedly mediated by Pakistan and Qatar as part of broader diplomatic efforts involving Iran.

Vance further noted that he had been in frequent contact with Munir over the past few months, stating, “I have probably talked to Munir more than I have talked to anyone else over the last three months.”

JD Vance and Usha Vance met in 2010 while studying at Yale Law School and married in 2014 in an interfaith ceremony. The couple has three children.
