The incident occurred in Tahirpur Upazila's Badaghat Union, where local residents staged demonstrations demanding action against the 25-year-old man.
Police later detained him as tensions escalated.
Social media allegation triggers protest
According to local sources, the controversy began on Monday morning when the youth allegedly shared a post from his personal Facebook account that was perceived by some members of the local Muslim community as insulting religious sentiments.
Screenshots and references to the alleged post quickly circulated on social media, prompting protests in Badaghat market.
Demonstrators organised a human chain and demanded the accused's arrest.
Police subsequently took the youth into custody from a shop in the market area.
A large crowd gathered during the detention, chanting slogans and calling for legal action.
Police launch probe
Tahirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Aminul Islam confirmed that the youth had been detained following allegations of hurting religious sentiments.
"The matter is being investigated with utmost importance. Necessary legal action will be taken in accordance with the law after the investigation is completed," he said.
The officer also appealed to residents not to spread rumours or inflammatory content and warned against taking the law into their own hands.
Authorities said they were closely monitoring the situation to prevent any further unrest.
Reports of vandalism after arrest
Local reports indicated that later in the evening, a group of individuals allegedly attacked the youth's property.
According to reports from the area, the youth's home, business establishment and at least three local Hindu temples were vandalised following the controversy.
Nazrul Islam Sikdar, president of the Badaghat Market Traders' Association, said the situation had become tense after the allegations surfaced.
He stated that police took the accused into custody due to the escalating situation and alleged that certain groups were attempting to exploit the controversy to further inflame tensions.
Taslima Nasrin raises concerns
Exiled Bangladeshi author and activist Taslima Nasrin commented on the incident in a Facebook post, expressing concern over the youth's safety and the treatment of the local Hindu community.
Referring to the allegations, Nasrin wrote that the youth was Hindu and claimed that residents of Garkati village in Badaghat Union had attempted to attack him over an alleged Facebook comment about Prophet Muhammad.
She stated that many people did not know what had actually been written in the post, but participated in attacks on his property and a temple.
She also noted that a case had been filed against the youth under Bangladesh's Cyber Security Act and that he had been arrested by police.
In her post, Nasrin expressed fears about the youth's future safety after his release from custody and suggested that members of his family and other Hindus in the area could face pressure to leave.
Her remarks have generated discussion on social media, although authorities have not commented on her claims.
Incident revives memories of Dipu Das lynching
The latest controversy has drawn comparisons with the lynching of a Hindu garment worker, Dipu Chandra Das, in Bangladesh in December last year.
Das, a 27-year-old factory worker from Mymensingh district, was attacked by a mob after allegations circulated that he had made derogatory remarks about Islam during a workplace conversation.
According to investigators from the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), no direct evidence was ultimately found to support claims of religious defamation.
Officials later stated that they were unable to identify anyone who had personally heard the alleged remarks.
Das was beaten by a crowd, dragged through the streets, hanged from a tree and then set on fire in an attack that drew widespread attention across Bangladesh and beyond.
Authorities subsequently arrested several suspects in connection with the case, and investigations remain ongoing.
The Sunamganj incident has renewed attention on the challenges authorities face in handling allegations linked to religious sentiments and social media content before investigations are completed.
Authorities continue monitoring situation
Police and local authorities remain on alert in Tahirpur as investigations continue.
Officials have urged residents to avoid spreading unverified information and to allow legal proceedings to take their course.
The detained youth remains in police custody while investigators examine the allegations and assess evidence related to the Facebook post that triggered the unrest.
