Three dead as strong 5.7 magnitude earthquake hits Bangladesh, tremors felt in Kolkata
At least three people died after an earthquake caused a railing to collapse from a five-storey building in Bangladesh capital Dhaka, on Friday.
Rafiqul Islam, chief of Bangshal Police Station, told bdnews24: “A railing from a five-storey building collapsed and fell amid the earthquake.”
An earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter Scale hit Bangladesh’s Narsingdi at a depth of 10km around 10.38 am on Friday, with strong tremors felt in the Indian city of Kolkata.
According to reports, two people died on the spot after they were hit by the railing in Dhaka.
The third person was shifted to Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital where he later died.
Meanwhile, more than 100 people died in Narsingdi, the epicentre of the quake.
Most of the injured sustained injuries while rushing out of their homes, witnesses told Dhaka Tribune.
The injured are receiving treatment at Narsingdi Sadar Hospital, Farida Parvin, resident medical officer of the hospital, told the newspaper.
In neighbouring India, tremors were felt in West Bengal's capital city Kolkata.
Apart from Kolkata, strong tremors were also felt in other parts of West Bengal, including Cooch Behar and Dakshin and Uttar Dinajpur.
Tremors were reported in Guwahati, Agartala, and Shillong as well.
"I was working on a desk when I first felt the tremor. Initially, I thought I was feeling dizzy but when I looked up to the ceiling fan, I was sure of the earthquake," a Kolkata resident told IBNS.
