Five killed, 21 injured in road accident in Meghalaya
Shillong/UNI: At least five women were killed and 21 others were injured after a pick-up jeep which they were travelling in to attend an election rally of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) overturned at Bolmedang area in North Garo Hills of Meghalaya district on Monday, police said.
“Most of the injured persons are seriously injured, but we cannot say how them are in critical condition and referred to Goalpara hospital in Assam for further treatment,” Shailendra Bamaniya, the district police chief of North Garo Hills, said.
The occupants of the pick-up were proceeding towards Adokgre village under the Kharkutta assembly constituency to attend an election rally in which former Chief Minister and TMC leader, Dr Mukul Sangma was to address the gathering.
The deceased were identified as Merina Sangma, Sabina Marak, Kukila Momin, Tesa Sangma and Sosin Marak.
Bamaniya said an investigation is on to ascertain the exact cause that led to the road accident, even as police have registered a suo moto case in connection with the accident.
