Fugitive Khalistani leader Amritpal Singh seeks UK citizenship to escape Indian law: Reports

New Delhi: Fugitive Khalistani leader Amritpal Singh wants UK citizenship to escape Indian law, media reports said on Friday.

The Waris Punjab De leader had applied for British citizenship in February, sources told CNN-News 18.

This is on the basis of his marriage with Kiran Kaur, who is a UK citizen, the news channel reported.

According to sources, Amritpal’s application is pending with British authorities and they are yet to take a decision on the matter.

This is probably because the separatist understood the pressure and atmosphere building against him through local authorities and civil society, officials told the news channel.

Meanwhile, Amritpal Singh was caught on CCTV camera leaving the home of a woman in Haryana who had sheltered him when he fled the police on Monday.

The footage shows the wanted Khalistani leader carrying an umbrella to hide his face.

He was spotted leaving the house in a white shirt and dark blue jeans.

The police have already arrested the woman Baljit Kaur in Haryana for allegedly providing refuge to Amritpal Singh and his associate Papalpreet Singh.

The arrest has led to speculations that Amritpal Singh might have fled Punjab. The authorities confirmed that the woman was arrested in the Shahabad region.

He has been on the run since then.

Amritpal Singh had changed five vehicles in 12 hours to escape arrest on Saturday.

The Khalistani leader's aide, Papalpreet Singh, has been with him since that day and both have been seen together in other CCTV footage.

Meanwhile, the police interrogated Singh’s wife, a UK-based NRI, over allegations of shoring up overseas funds for the pro-Khalistani group Waris Punjab De, her husband's helms.

The Centre has also invoked the National Security Act (NSA) against Singh and a non-bailable warrant was issued against him.

Singh is linked to a massive protest on Feb 23 against the arrest of his key aide and kidnapping accused, Lovepreet Singh. Six policemen were injured during the clash.
