The Meteorological Centre Srinagar said Srinagar, the summer capital of J&K, recorded a low of 1.2°C, some four notches up from Friday night. On Thursday night, Srinagar recorded minus 3.3 degrees Celsius.

The minimum temperature in north Kashmir’s Gulmarg resort was registered at -1.5°C and 1.3°C in the frontier town of Kupwara.

The mercury dropped to a low of 1.4 °C in the southern gateway town of Qazigund and 0.2°C at Pahalgam resort. Pahalgam recorded an improvement of over four degrees from the previous night.

Very light snow was recorded in Gulmarg and some parts of Shopian during the early morning hours on Saturday.

The 40-day harshest winter, known as “chillai kalan," began in Kashmir on Thursday. Since early December, the Kashmir valley has been recording sub-zero temperatures.

The MeT center said there is overall no significant weather activity until December. However, on December 27, there is a possibility of light snow over isolated higher reaches.
