In a major boost to Tripura's healthcare infrastructure, the state is set to receive 48 AI-enabled portable handheld X-ray machines along with MRI and advanced mammography units to strengthen medical services across the state, particularly in remote and rural areas.
In this regard, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in New Delhi on June 29, 2026, between the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of Union government and the Health and Family Welfare Department of Tripura in the presence of senior officials from both sides, including the Additional Secretary of the Union Health Ministry and the Health Secretary of Tripura.
The project will be implemented with financial assistance from the Prime Minister's special fund.
Under the agreement, Tripura will receive 48 AI-enabled portable handheld X-ray machines. These lightweight and easily transportable devices will allow healthcare workers to conduct X-ray examinations at patients' homes, particularly in remote and hilly regions, eliminating the need to transport patients to hospitals and enabling quicker and more accurate diagnosis.
Additionally, three district hospitals in Dhalai, North Tripura and Gomati districts will be equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment. Each of these hospitals will receive a 1.5 Tesla MRI machine capable of providing high-resolution imaging of internal organs and tissues for improved diagnosis and treatment.
The same three district hospitals will also be provided with Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) units, an advanced 3D mammography technology designed to detect breast cancer in women at an early stage, significantly improving screening and diagnosis capabilities.
According to the Health Department, the process of procuring and operationalising these machines for public use has already begun.
Sharing the development, Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha in a ‘Facebook’ message said that "Tripura will receive MRI machines, Mammography Units and AI-enabled Handheld X-ray Machines from the Prime Minister's Fund. Today, an MoU was signed between the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, and the Tripura Health Department for the supply and operationalisation of 48 AI-enabled Portable Handheld X-ray Machines, three MRI (1.5T) Machines and three Digital Mammography Tomosynthesis (DBT) Units."
He added that these facilities would be installed at district hospitals in Dhalai, North Tripura and Gomati districts, significantly strengthening healthcare delivery in the state.
The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister JP Nadda for their continued support in upgrading Tripura's healthcare infrastructure.
