AMC-run Civil Hospital in Agartala likely to open in June: Mayor
The Agartala civil hospital being developed by the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) is likely to be inaugurated soon, Mayor Dipak Majumder said on Wednesday, expressing hope that healthcare services could begin from the first week of June.
The project, initially scheduled for inauguration on December 25 last year, faced delays due to the slow pace of construction. As the executing agency failed to complete the work within the stipulated time frame, the opening had to be postponed.
The Mayor on Wednesday visited the construction site in the Jackson Gate area of the city to review progress. He was accompanied by Central Zone Chairman and Councillor Ratna Dutta, along with AMC officials. The hospital is being set up in the old municipal building as per the direction of Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, who drew inspiration from a municipal hospital model in Mumbai.
Spread across approximately 18,000 square feet, the modern facility will have a capacity of 50 beds. It is expected to ease the burden on the state’s two main referral hospitals—Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGM) and Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital.
Following the inspection, Majumder said the hospital is likely to be inaugurated by the Chief Minister after a final review scheduled for May 20. He added that the seven primary health centres in the city will function under this civil hospital once it becomes operational.
Funded by the state government and to be managed by AMC, the hospital is expected to significantly enhance healthcare services for residents of Agartala and adjoining areas by offering modern healthcare facilities.
