Assam Rifles commemorates its long association with state of Tripura

In commemoration of the historic association of 6 Assam Rifles with Tripura state, the Battalion presented a replica of 200 year old Burmese bell to Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, the royal scion of Tripura.
6th Assam Rifles was erstwhile known as the 1st Bir Bikram Manikya Tripura Rifles (1st BBM Tripura Rifles), was the State force of Tripura before independence.
1 BBM Tripura Rifles fought against the Japanese in World War II and was awarded with two Battle honours - "Arakan I and II".
Honouring the heroics of the battalion, the chief of Utanu tribe of Burma presented a Bell casted in Bronze to Jemadar Maher Singh Thapa of 1 BBM Tripura Rifles, to be handed over to the King of Tripura.
After independence of India, the state force was re-raised as 6 Assam Rifles in the year 1950. Maharani Kanchan Prabha Devi, then presented the battalion with the Burmese bell to commemorate the wonderful association. The original bell is presently placed in Director General Assam Rifles Museum in Shillong.
