The deceased, Prasenjit Sarkar (23), a resident of Dharmanagar in North Tripura district, was working as a delivery boy with a private courier company.
According to allegations made by Sarkar’s family, three women and two men physically assaulted him at his office on December 14 following a dispute related to the delivery of a parcel. The accused allegedly videographed the assault and later circulated the video on social media, subjecting Sarkar to severe public humiliation and mental trauma.
Unable to cope with the humiliation, the young man, the only earning member of his family, allegedly died by suicide on the same day (December 14), leaving behind his grieving mother and poor family.
The incident has triggered widespread protests across Tripura, with various political parties and organizations demanding justice for Sarkar and stringent punishment for those responsible.
However, the court has once again taken a major decision on Saturday and rejected the bail petitions filed by the five accused in this case.
Since the very beginning, several questions have been raised surrounding the death of Prasenjit Sarkar. The family has alleged that this was not a natural death, but that he was deliberately murdered as part of a planned conspiracy. After the incident, the police launched an investigation, arrested five persons, and registered cases against them under serious charges.
Although bail petitions were submitted on behalf of the accused on Saturday, the court rejected them, taking into consideration the seriousness of the case, the progress of the investigation, and the available evidence. The deceased’s family has expressed relief over this decision.
“The court has clearly sent a message that in such sensitive and serious cases, the rule of law is paramount. Denial of bail to the accused will further strengthen the judicial process,” said a government advocate.
