CPI(M) alleges violation of MCC over PMEGP subsidy transfer in Tripura
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) has raised serious allegations of violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in Tripura, accusing the state government of unlawfully transferring PMEGP subsidy funds to beneficiaries during the election period.
In a formal communication addressed to the Election Commission of India, the State Election Commission, and the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Tripura, CPI(M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury expressed strong dissatisfaction over the explanation provided by the Director of the Industries and Commerce Department.
According to the letter, the Industries and Commerce department of Tripura government admitted that the funds were disbursed while the MCC was in force. It was also acknowledged that the beneficiaries had been selected three years ago. The department justified its action by citing an Election Commission clause that allows continuation of schemes where beneficiaries were identified prior to the enforcement of the MCC.
However, CPI(M) has rejected this explanation, terming it a “lame excuse” and a misinterpretation of the spirit of the MCC. The party argued that no government scheme should remain pending for years only to be implemented during an election period, suggesting that the timing of the fund transfer was politically motivated.
Chaudhury alleged that the move was “partisan” and intended to benefit the ruling party during elections. He also expressed disappointment over what he described as the Election Commission’s reluctance to take an independent and decisive stand on the issue.
The CPI(M) leader maintained that the matter remains unresolved and reiterated the party’s demand for strict action against those responsible for the alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct.
The controversy comes amid heightened political activity in Tripura ahead of upcoming elections, with opposition parties closely monitoring administrative decisions for possible breaches of electoral norms.
