Death of animals at Sepahijala Zoo a natural process, claims Forest Minister
Amid media reports highlighting the deaths of six animals and birds inside the Sepahijala Zoo, Tripura Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma on Friday reviewed the functioning of the zoo and maintained that such deaths are a natural process, denying any dereliction of duty by zoo staff.
Concerns have been raised over consecutive deaths reported at the zoo during November and December. The deceased animals and birds included two myna birds, an eagle, a spectacled monkey, a capped langur, and a fishing cat.
On January 13, Director of Sepahijala Zoo Siddharth Debbarma admitted the deaths on the zoo campus. Subsequently, allegations were leveled against the zoo’s veterinarian Dr. Keshab Debnath, curator Bibhrat Marak, and biologist Chiranjit Debnath, accusing them of failing to properly discharge their responsibilities.
Serious complaints have also surfaced regarding inadequate care, maintenance, and food for the animals and birds. In addition, allegations of commission-based corruption in construction works within the zoo premises have been made, prompting local residents to demand the intervention of higher authorities.
Following widespread media reports alleging negligence, Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma, accompanied by senior department officials, conducted a surprise visit to the zoo to review its overall activities.
Speaking to the media after the inspection, the minister said there is an urgent need for repair of roads and other infrastructure inside the zoo and instructed officials to undertake immediate maintenance work. He also directed them to ensure better facilities for visitors, improve plastic waste management, and maintain cleanliness.
The minister further noted the requirement for trained manpower for proper care and nurturing of animals, adding that the department would initiate steps for their immediate recruitment.
Responding to questions on the recent deaths, the minister reiterated that birth and death are natural processes and asserted that there were no irregularities in the zoo’s functioning. He added that zoo staffs are working round the clock to ensure the safety of the animals and that they are being provided with proper food.
