DGP reviews security preparedness in Khowai and Dhalai ahead of ADC polls
Amid escalating tensions over election campaigns and clashes between supporters of the BJP and Tipra Motha Party (TMP), particularly in Kamalpur under Dhalai district, Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar on Thursday visited the region to review the law and order situation ahead of the upcoming Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections.
At least 20 people, including security personnel and a Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), were injured in violence that erupted on Wednesday during election campaigning.
As part of his visit, the DGP first reached the Superintendent of Police’s office in Khowai district, where he chaired a high-level review meeting in preparation for the ADC elections scheduled to be held on April 12. The meeting was attended by Superintendents of Police from Khowai and Dhalai districts, along with other senior officials.
Later, Dhankar visited Kamalpur police station in Dhalai district, where clashes had broken out during a BJP campaign. The violence reportedly involved the use of sticks and other weapons, leaving several injured, including members of the security forces. Some BJP workers were also injured during subsequent police action.
According to reports, the situation worsened when miscreants allegedly obstructed and attacked the convoy of BJP candidate and local MLA Manoj Kanti Deb. In response, security personnel resorted to lathi charge and fired tear gas shells to disperse the mob and restore order. The আহত were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Following the incidents, heavy security deployment has been ensured in the affected areas to prevent any further unrest.
Speaking to media persons after the review meetings, DGP Anurag Dhankar said that the overall security situation in Khowai and Dhalai districts has been assessed thoroughly. He added that the police department has completed all necessary preparations for the forthcoming elections, with a large number of security personnel deployed across sensitive areas.
He further stated that adequate measures have been taken to maintain law and order, and police forces have been put on high alert to ensure a peaceful electoral process.
During the meeting, the DGP instructed the Superintendents of Police and TSR commandants to ensure adequate security during campaign activities of all political parties and to intensify patrolling in sensitive locations. He emphasized that the police will remain vigilant to maintain peace in all areas where ADC elections are scheduled to be held on April 12.
Addressing the media, the DGP stated that adequate security arrangements have been put in place to ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections. He assured that sufficient police personnel, along with TSR (Tripura State Rifles) forces, have been deployed and that there will be no shortage in security measures during the election process. DGP also visited the 6th TSR battalion headquarters at Ramchandra Nagar and interacted with jawans and officers.
