Former Forest Minister, eight-time MLA, and veteran CPI (M) leader Faizur Rahman was laid to rest with full state honours on Saturday, marking the end of a distinguished political career that spanned several decades. His demise has cast a deep shadow of grief across North Tripura and the state’s political landscape.
Rahman breathed his last at around 1 AM on Saturday at his residence in Lalcherra under North Tripura district. He was 75 years old and was survived by his wife, three daughters, two sons, and a large number of relatives, admirers, political associates, and well-wishers.
As news of his passing spread, political leaders, party workers, administrative officials, eminent personalities, and members of the public from different parts of the district gathered at his residence to pay their final respects. Known for his close association with ordinary people and his lifelong commitment to public service, Rahman was widely respected across political and social circles.
The state funeral ceremony was held at around 3:00 PM on Saturday at a ground adjacent to his residence. Personnel of the Tripura Police and the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) accorded him a ceremonial Guard of Honour as a mark of respect. Following the official tribute, his last rites were performed in accordance with Islamic traditions after the offering of Janaza prayers.
Among those present at the funeral were North Tripura District Magistrate Chandni Chandran, Additional District Magistrate Devyani Chowdhury, Additional Superintendent of Police Kamal Debbarma, Kadamtala-Kurti MLA Islam Uddin, Bagbasa MLA Yadav Lal Nath, Yubarajnagar MLA Shailendra Chandra Nath, and BJP district leaders, representatives of various political parties, social figures, family members, and hundreds of mourners.
Speaking on the occasion, DM (North) Chandni Chandran said that all administrative protocols were followed to ensure a dignified state funeral for the former minister.
“We have bid farewell to former minister Faizur Rahman with due honour and in accordance with all official procedures. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family,” she said.
Kadamtala-Kurti MLA Islam Uddin, in his tribute, described Rahman as one of the most popular mass leaders of the region.
“For nearly four decades, he served the people as an MLA. He also held key responsibilities as Forest Minister, a member of the CPI (M) State Committee, and Chairman of the Tripura Waqf Board. He was not merely a political leader but a guardian of the people of this area. The void created by his demise will be difficult to fill,” Uddin remarked.
A towering figure in Tripura’s political history, Faizur Rahman was known for his long-standing contribution to public life, grassroots leadership, and dedication to social welfare. His death has been widely mourned by political leaders, party workers, and citizens across the state, who remembers him as a seasoned statesman and a people’s leader.
