Govt committed to strengthening higher education: CM
Many private universities set to come up in Tripura: CM
Tripura Chief Minister Prof. Dr Manik Saha on Friday said that the present government is committed to enhancing the higher education ecosystem in the state.
He said that the National Education Policy (NEP) aims to promote multidisciplinary learning, skill development, value-based education and global preparedness.
Dr Saha said this while addressing the inauguration and foundation stone laying ceremony of Techno India University, Tripura (TIUT) infrastructure and allied facilities.
“This event is not just another milestone for an institution. It marks a momentous step forward for the education landscape of Tripura. I think it is a reflection of the growing importance of higher education in our state and I am pleased to witness this development firsthand. Today, the Techno India University, Tripura, alongside the Techno College of Engineering, Agartala, is home to approximately 2,800 students. These students come from diverse backgrounds, with many from Tripura as well as other states such as Punjab, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and West Bengal, and we also have students from Bangladesh, which highlights the expanding reach of this institution,” he said.
Dr Saha said that the NEP aims to promote multidisciplinary learning, skill development, value-based education and global preparedness. It also encourages an innovative approach to education and stresses the importance of preparing students for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
“The Government of Tripura is committed to enhancing the higher education ecosystem in the state. Our vision is to make Tripura a leading hub—our Honourable Minister has already spoken about it—for educational excellence in the Northeast. We are working towards creating robust infrastructure, improving faculty quality and ensuring greater access to educational resources for all students. Our policies and initiatives are aimed at creating an environment where students can thrive, learn and build a future that is not only fulfilling for them personally, but also contributes to the development of our state and nation,” said Dr Saha.
He said that the education system must connect with the needs of industry, research, innovation and community development.
“We are proud to see that our educational institutions are increasingly involving students in diverse activities such as scientific research, skill development workshops, legal awareness campaigns and community outreach programs. Over the past few years, we have seen rapid infrastructure development, expanding connectivity and new opportunities emerging for the youth. Our government is committed to creating an environment where education plays a central role in preparing the next generation for a globalized, technology-driven world. I would like to take this opportunity to urge all our students here today to take full advantage of the resources and opportunities available to you,” said Dr Saha.
Dr Saha said that in Tripura we have three medical colleges including a private medical college, one dental college, a B.Sc. nursing college, a pharmacology college, and ANM and GNM institutions. We have 28 general degree colleges, 6 polytechnic colleges, 5 professional colleges and one degree technical college, TIT, which we are planning to make a university. We have one NIT, NFSU (National Forensic Science University), Agricultural College, Veterinary College, Central Sanskrit University, and we also have private universities.
“There are many private universities in the pipeline and hopefully they will also get the opportunity to set up their universities in Tripura,” he added.
The event was attended by Higher Education Minister Kishore Barman, Chancellor of Techno India University Professor Satyam Roy Chowdhury, Co-Chairperson of Techno India Professor Manasi Roy Chowdhury, Former Vice Chancellor of Tripura University Padma Shri Professor Arunoday Saha, Vice Chancellor of Techno India University Professor Dr. Ratan Kumar Saha and other dignitaries.
