Howrah flood water receding, many affected families still in camps

Though, the flood situation in adjoining areas of river Howrah is now improving after stopping incessant rainfall, which started from May 31 to till June 1st afternoon in and around Agartala.

Due to very heavy and continuous rainfall over the past few days since May 30th, the water level of rivers in Tripura has remained inflated significantly. Tripura received significant rainfall in the last 72 hours , notably in West Tripura District (Agartala: 140 mm) , as a result ,the whole capital city is affected with floods very badly.

The fresh flood at the adjoining areas of river Howrah and other parts of the state after incessant rain during the last 48 hours under the influence of the deep depression in Bay of Bengal, rendered thousands people homeless in all low lying areas of river Howrah.

The administration has set up dozens relief camps in different parts of the Agartala city and other parts of the state and above 10,800 families have been rescued so far.

Though since Monday morning flood water started receding from river Howrah, still hundreds of victim families are in different relief camps.

Official sources said that relief camps have been activated with food, medical aid and basic facilities for all displaced persons. As on Monday, a total of 66 relief camps are operating with 2,926 families , comprising 10, 813 inmates.

Revenue department sources said that a total of 50 relief camps are opened in West Tripura district, wherein 2,352 families are sheltered. Altogether 219 houses were damaged in Gomati, Khowai, Sepahijala, South Tripura and North Tripura districts.

Roads blocked by fallen trees in Gomati districts have been cleared by the Forest department and the water level in river Howrah has reduced considerably  in the last 24-hours and is now flowing below critical level.

While giving details, District Magistrate (DM) of West Tripura district, Dr Vishal Kumar said that the Disaster Management teams, SDRF, trained ‘Aapda Mitra’ and Civil Defence Volunteers, NDRF, TSR and Assam Rifles were pressed into action for rescue and relief operations and restoring the essential services.

On Saturday (May 31st)  hundreds of families from Chandpur, Trinath, Baldakhal ,Chandrapur, Aralia and Pratapgarh areas of Agartala were forced to take shelter due to heavy rainfall and fresh water in river Howrah.

Several families in adjoining areas of river Howrah were evacuated by the administration and volunteers from flooded area of Pratapgarh, Aralia, Jogendranagar, Kathashewla, Chandrapur, Baldakhal areas of the eastern part of the city since Saturday midnight, who were sheltered in relief camps including some makeshift camps.

Vehicular movement was also hampered in some portions of National Highway-8 adjoining the river Howrah and normal life was severely affected in different parts of eastern Agartala.

The flood water pumps in inundated areas start immediately to extract flood water in the capital city on Saturday evening, but the ongoing construction of covered drains in large parts of the city caused movement of flood water.

Chief Minister Dr Mank Saha, AMC Mayor Dipak Majumder along with other administrative persons are continuously monitoring the flood situation across Agartala and they have also visited many relief camps to review relief and rescue operations.

Dr Vishal Kumar  said that the situation is improving in all adjoining areas of river Howrah, no fresh rain reported after Monday morning and there is no need to panic. He added that flood water rises in river Howrah after fresh rainfalls and receding of water will be completed soon if there is no fresh rain.

He also said that so far the district administration unable to assess the property losses in the flood, but they will able to asses’ property losses after flood water completely recedes.
