Around 20 injured including police personnel; lathi charge and tear gas used to disperse Tipra Motha supporters
Though, on Wednesday tension gripped Kamalpur after violent clashes broke out during a BJP campaign, leaving at least 20 people injured, including security personnel and a Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO), but on Thursday the situation remains tense but under control.
On Wednesday, BJP leaders, workers, and supporters were attacked at two separate locations while campaigning. The violence reportedly involved sticks and other weapons. Among the injured were several security personnel, though a few BJP workers were also hurt during the police action.
The situation escalated when miscreants allegedly created obstructions and attacked the convoy. In response, security forces resorted to lathi charge and fired tear gas shells to bring the situation under control. Several individuals were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.
BJP leaders claimed the attack was unprovoked and politically motivated. Kamalpur Mandal Committee Secretary Keshab Bhowmik and former Mandal President Shyamal Pal stated that the attack was carried out without any provocation, accusing rival Tipra-Motha of attempting to disrupt their campaign.
Following the incident, the candidates and party members moved to a safer location near the national highway and later continued their campaign. However, a second round of violence reportedly occurred shortly afterward, where vehicles belonging to the candidate and his associates were targeted.
Local MLA Manoj Kanti Deb condemned the incident, calling it a deliberate attempt to derail the democratic process. BJP candidate Ananta Debbarma also echoed similar concerns, alleging that opposition-backed Tipra-Motha miscreants were behind the attack.
After the incidents, the injured—including the SDPO and several security personnel—are undergoing treatment. Heavy security deployment has been made in the area to prevent further unrest.
