Manipur: Assam Rifles jawan fires at colleagues, injuring six
Imphal: At least six Assam Rifles personnel were injured in a deadly shooting after a jawan opened fire inside a camp before killing himself in Manipur's Chandel district.
According to police, the firing occurred at around 2am on Wednesday, in a Assam Rifles Battalion camp located at Sajik Tampak close to the Indo - Myanmar border in South Manipur.
It was reported that one Assam Rifles jawan using his service rifle started firing on his colleagues indiscriminately injuring six of them (all injured are non-Manipuris). After shooting, the jawan ran away and later the jawan shot himself. All injured have been evacuated to Military Hospital for further treatment and reported to be stable. The jawan who opened fire and later shot himself is identified as Havildar Sangpi Baite.
Manipur Police in a statement said this unfortunate incident should not be correlated with ongoing conflict, given the fact that none of the injured are from Manipur. Investigation into the incident has been ordered to ascertain the facts.
