Manipur: Dead body of a youth recovered
Imphal: A seven second video going viral on social media showing an armed man cutting the neck of a youth (beheading) with a sharp knife has led to the discovery of the headless decomposed corpse of the victim in Manipur.
The victim is identified as 17 year old Ngangom Nevy(Meetei community), a native of Sugnu Awang Leikai in Kakching district(valley district). Nevy, son of Ng. Sanakhomba went missing on May 28, 2023, the day when armed Kuki miscreants attacked and burned down houses and properties in Serou and Sugnu area of Kakching district. The Serou and Sugnu area are inhabited by both Meetei and Kukis.
After the video of the gruesome execution surfaced on social media and went viral on Tuesday, 30th January, 2023, Kakching Police carried out a visual and map identification process and found out the place where the video was shot. On the morning of Wednesday, 31st January 2023, a combined team of Kakching District Police, 37 Assam Rifles led by A. Romendro the Additional SP Law and Order of Kakching District under the supervision of Kakching District SP Th. Vikramjit and family members of Nevy visited Sokom Village near Sugnu and searched for the remains of the body of the individual.
A thorough search was conducted by the team and at around 11 am the team discovered the mortal remains of the youth from a drain located near the place which was shown in the viral video. After the remains were discovered, the Executive Magistrate of Sugnu and a Forensic Science Laboratory team arrived at the location. The Forensic team then dug up the dry drain and retrieved the remains, and further carried out their investigative process.
The clothing on the deceased had helped the families identify that the body was indeed of the missing youth, Nevy. Later, Sugnu Police brought the remains of the victim at the mortuary of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal for post mortem.
In January, 2024 alone, 20 individuals had been killed and 41 individuals injured in gunfights at different areas in the state.
The family members of Nevy had already performed his last rites using a dummy body, as he could not be found for eight months and presumed dead.
