Mob punishes two youths in Kailashahar over alleged sale of Beef as Mutton
Serious allegations have surfaced from the Ranchi Tilla area under Ward No. 1 of Jalay Gram Panchayat in Kailashahar of Unakoti district, where two Hindu youths were accused of allegedly selling beef to members of the Hindu community by falsely claiming it to be mutton over an extended period.
The accused, identified as Mansa Munda and Sujit Bhumij, are residents of the locality and belong to tea garden labourer families. Both were reportedly engaged in selling meat in the area for a long time.
Local Villagers sources said that suspicions arose among residents in recent days after consuming meat purchased from the duo. On Tuesday afternoon, villagers allegedly caught the two youths red-handed while cutting beef at their residence. Following this, an angry mob reportedly assaulted them.
Later, a local social worker, Apu Shil, reached the spot and questioned the accused. During the interrogation, both youths allegedly admitted that they had been selling beef as mutton to local Hindu residents for a long time.
Subsequently, the villagers reportedly forced the two to perform public acts of repentance, including making them do sit-ups holding their ears and shaving their heads as a form of punishment. Preparations are also said to be underway to conduct a religious ritual (Harinam Sankirtan) on Wednesday, after which they would be re-initiated into the Sanatani Hindu faith.
The incident has triggered strong tension in the area, with a large number of people gathering at the site.
However, the matter has also raised serious concerns, as no formal complaint has reportedly been lodged with the police. Questions remain over whether others were involved in the alleged act, how long the practice had been continuing and the source of the cattle—whether legally purchased or otherwise. The situation continues to remain tense as further details are awaited.
