The stretch of National Highway 208 from Erarpar through Manikbhandar to Lambuchhara–Anandabazar has reportedly become a death trap, with residents alleging prolonged administrative neglect despite repeated complaints and extensive media coverage.
According to locals, the road has become virtually impassable due to large potholes, damaged sections, and rainwater accumulation. The deteriorating condition has been posing serious risks to commuters and increasing the likelihood of road accidents on a daily basis.
Residents claim that although the issue has been highlighted several times in the media and brought to the attention of the authorities, no effective measures have been taken to repair the road. They have questioned whether such reports are merely making headlines or whether the administration has any responsibility to resolve the problem.
Hundreds of vehicles, including school and college buses, ambulances, auto-rickshaws, motorcycles, passenger vehicles, and goods-laden trucks, use the road every day. However, each journey has become increasingly hazardous. The poor condition of the road is causing frequent vehicle damage, increasing maintenance costs, wasting commuters’ time, and raising the risk of serious accidents.
Local residents said that while taxes are collected and promises are made, the reality on the ground remains starkly different. The situation worsens during the monsoon, as potholes become submerged under rainwater, making it nearly impossible for drivers to distinguish between the road surface and dangerous craters.
Residents have now demanded immediate and permanent reconstruction of the highway instead of further assurances. They warned that the deplorable condition of a national highway reflects not only administrative negligence but also poses a serious threat to public safety and everyday life. They further questioned who would take responsibility if a major accident occurs due to continued inaction by the authorities.
