Six CPI (M) leaders, workers injured in attack on rally at Dharmanagar
At least six CPI (M) leaders and workers, including the party’s North Tripura district committee secretary and former MLA Amitabha Datta, sustained critical injuries on Wednesday after unidentified miscreants attacked a rally in Dharmanagar town under North Tripura district.
Leader of the Opposition and CPI (M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury strongly condemned the attack, alleging that during a peaceful rally protesting against the “anti-farmer and anti-working-class policies” of the Union Government, groups of miscreants carrying BJP flags launched an indiscriminate assault in the presence of police personnel.
“As a result, six party workers, including former MLA Amitabha Datta and leader Ratan Roy, suffered critical injuries and were admitted to a local hospital,” Chaudhury said.
The incident occurred barely a day after unknown attackers allegedly attempted to set fire to the Congress district headquarters in Dharmanagar, heightening political tensions in the region.
Police sources said the injured CPI (M) workers were taken to the Dharmanagar District Hospital and that their condition is currently stable.
According to local sources, the CPI (M) rally—held under the banner of the All India Krishak Sabha (AIKS) as part of a nationwide programme—came under attack near the Congress party office in Dharmanagar.
Suddenly, around 150 unidentified miscreants armed with bamboo sticks charged at the rally. Six workers, including district secretary Amitabha Datta, were injured, with Datta sustaining a severe head injury.
Police said no case had been registered until Wednesday night but added that security had been intensified in the area to prevent further unrest.
CPI (M) state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury further alleged that “BJP goons carried out the attack on CPI(M) workers in the presence of police,” and criticised Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha’s claims of improved law and order. He urged the public to resist such violent activities and “raise their voices against the ruling party’s oppressive politics.”
He also demanded immediate action against those responsible for the assault.
Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Ashish Kumar Saha, while speaking to the media, condemned both the previous night’s alleged attempt to torch the Congress office and the attack on the CPI (M) rally. He strongly criticized the ruling party for “targeting peaceful democratic activities.”
