Suspected cattle smuggler killed in BSF firing at Sonamura border
A suspected cattle smuggler was shot dead by BSF jawans with wee hours of Sunday at bordering Durgapur village of Sonamura subdivision who was allegedly smuggling cows along with other smugglers.
Sources said that a group of smugglers were reportedly smuggling cows to Bangladesh on that fateful night. When BSF jawans of 133rd battalion posted at Durgapur border noticed the incident, they tried to stop smuggling and apprehend the smugglers.
But, the smugglers engaged in cow smuggling attacks on the BSF party and subsequently, BSF jawans opened fire in retaliation. While, after BSF opened fire, smugglers managed to escape from the spot, one Alamgir Hossain (42) of Durgapur village, who was allegedly associated with the smuggling sustained bullet injuries and died on the spot.
Local people rushed to the spot and shifted Alamgir to the Sonamura hospital, where the visiting doctors declared him dead.
Meanwhile, Alamgir's family alleged that he was a poor man and never associated with any kind of smuggling and engaged in a hot altercation with BSF jawans.
When BSF pursued the smugglers, they sought refuge near Alamgir's residence close to the border. It was then that the innocent Alamgir was fatally shot by the BSF, claimed a local villager.
The villagers demanded stringent action against the BSF personnel, who were involved with the killing of Alamgir.
