Serious allegations have surfaced against police personnel after a suspected drug smuggler detained with cannabis (Ganja) allegedly escaped from the Government Railway Police (GRP) station in Belonia under South Tripura district in suspicious circumstances on Tuesday. Eyewitnesses, including local auto-rickshaw drivers, have accused police officials of facilitating the escape through financial dealings, a claim strongly denied by the officers concerned.

Sources said that GRP personnel intercepted a vehicle bearing registration number TR07G-02267 at Belonia Railway station on Tuesday morning after finding its movements suspicious. During a search, police reportedly recovered several kilograms of dry Ganja from a bag inside the vehicle. While three occupants managed to flee, one individual was detained along with the seized contraband.

Witnesses alleged that within 20–25 minutes of the detention, Belonia police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Premjit Roy and Special Branch (SB) personnel Nepal Namo arrived at the scene in plain clothes in a police vehicle. The detained suspected drug smuggler and the recovered cannabis were then taken inside the GRP police station.

According to local residents, they were prevented from entering the room and were told that “nothing had happened.” Shortly afterward, SI Premjit Roy, SB personnel Nepal Namo, and GRP staff reportedly exited the room. Eyewitnesses claim that within minutes, the suspected smuggler ran out of the GRP station and escaped.

Auto-rickshaw drivers present at the station alleged that while some locals attempted to chase the fleeing suspect, police personnel made no apparent effort to apprehend him. They further claimed that the escape was facilitated through monetary transactions. According to the witnesses, the suspect’s escape was also captured on journalists’ cameras.

Responding to the allegations, SI Premjit Roy denied any involvement, stating, “I did not know anything about this incident. I had gone to the GRP station only to drop off my family members. The allegations are completely false.” SB personnel Nepal Namo also denied any connection with the incident.
