The Higher Education Department of the Tripura has officially launched the admission process for undergraduate courses in Government Degree Colleges (GDCs) across the state for the academic session 2026-27. Admissions will be conducted entirely online through the SAMARTH portal, in line with the guidelines of Tripura University and the Union Ministry of Education.
According to a press note issued by the department, admissions have commenced for 29 institutions, including the newly established Government Women’s Degree College at Nalchar in Sepahijala district. Undergraduate BA and BSc programmes will also be offered at IASE, Kunjaban and CTE, Kumarghat.
The online application process began on May 29 and will continue until June 7, 2026, up to midnight. The first merit list will be published on June 19, followed by the first round of admissions from June 22 to June 23. Subsequent rounds of admissions will be conducted based on vacancy lists and merit rankings, with the final round scheduled from July 4 to July 6.
While, addressing a press conference at Civil secretariat in Agartala on Saturday, Special Secretary, Education (School) Department,Raval Hamendra Kumar said that candidates applying through the SAMARTH portal will be allowed to select up to four colleges and two major subjects in each institution according to their preferences. Merit lists will be prepared by the respective colleges in accordance with intake capacities and the state’s reservation policy.
The department highlighted several major initiatives for the new academic session. A new Government Women’s Degree College at Nalchar will begin operations from the 2026-27 academic year, aiming to improve access to higher education for girls in the region, said Kumar.
He said that in another significant development, a new B.Sc. programme in Computer Science has been introduced at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Education (IASE), Kunjaban, with an intake capacity of 30 students. Additionally, the intake capacity for the BA (English Major) programme at IASE has been increased from 25 to 50 seats.
Following the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 guidelines, efforts are underway to transform IASE, Kunjaban and CTE, Kumarghat into multidisciplinary institutions. Undergraduate BA programmes had already been introduced in these institutions during the 2025-26 academic session.
Kumar stated that the total intake capacity for first-semester admissions in Government Degree Colleges stood at 31,954 during the 2025-26 academic year. With the establishment of the new college at Nalchar and the introduction of additional courses, the intake capacity has increased by 205 seats. As a result, a total of 32,159 seats are now available across the state’s Government Degree Colleges for the 2026-27 academic session.
Officials estimate that around 28,967 students have passed the Higher Secondary examinations this year, including 21,026 students from the Tripura Board of Secondary Education, 3,941 students from Vidya Jyoti CBSE schools run by the state government, and approximately 4,000 students from other CBSE, Kendriya Vidyalaya, private schools and open boards.
The department also announced that gazette notifications have been issued for upgrading the Tripura Institute of Technology (TIT) into Tripura Government Technical University and Women’s College, Agartala into Tripura Government Women’s University. Necessary steps are currently being taken to establish both institutions as full-fledged universities.
The Higher Education Department reiterated that the online admission process through the SAMARTH portal is aimed at ensuring transparency, efficiency and merit-based admissions across all Government Degree Colleges in Tripura.
