Tripura to convene one-day Assembly session on April 30 to discuss women reservation
The Tripura Legislative Assembly will hold a special one-day session on April 30 to deliberate on issues related to the protection and advancement of women’s constitutional rights, with particular focus on the proposed Women’s Reservation Bill.
The session will take up discussions on the 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill, also known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which seeks to provide one-third reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced the development following a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) held at the Assembly on Monday. He said the session has been convened by Speaker Rampada Jamatia after receiving a formal request from 17 MLAs, including Chief Whip Kalyani Saha Roy.
The proposal, submitted through a Notice of Motion, aims to build a broader political consensus across the country and urges the Centre to initiate the delimitation process based on the 2011 Census. It also calls for renewed legislative efforts to ensure women’s representation in elected bodies.
Nath stated that the Speaker took note of the importance of the matter raised by the legislators and scheduled the special sitting accordingly, while the BAC finalized the proceedings for the day.
The session will begin with obituary references, with the House paying tribute to former Minister Kartik Kanya Debbarma and noted playback singer Asha Bhosle.
After the obituary references, the BAC report will be presented, followed by a detailed discussion on the motion. Members from various political parties, including CPI(M) and Congress, are expected to take part.
The Minister added that after adopting the motion, the Assembly plans to collectively appeal to the Central Government and political parties to take forward the long-pending constitutional amendment, describing it as a matter of significant national importance.
