Tripura touches 6 MW of Solar Power, targets 10 MW by March-2026, TSECL

Sunlight in Tripura is no longer just a gift of nature—it is rapidly becoming a symbol of development and income source for a large number of power consumers.

Under the ‘Prime Minister Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana’, the state’s solar energy initiative has achieved a significant milestone. Solar power generation has crossed the 6-megawatt (MW) mark, a historic moment in Tripura’s renewable energy journey.

According to the Managing Director (MD) Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), Biswajit Basu, the state is confidently moving towards surpassing the 10-megawatt target by March, 2026 next.

The response to this scheme across the state has been unprecedented. So far, 17,131 electricity consumers have registered themselves under the program. Among them, installation of solar panels has been completed in 1,762 households, said Basu and added that these 1,762 rooftops are no longer mere brick-and-cement structures—they have transformed into mini power stations, collectively generating 6-MW of electricity every day by harnessing sunlight.

A time when sunset meant fear of darkness has now changed. Today, the same sun ensures uninterrupted illumination in homes across Tripura. Beyond lighting homes, the project is also opening new avenues of income, said Basu.

He added that the most significant aspect of this scheme is that consumers are not only meeting their own electricity requirements, but are also selling surplus power to the state electricity corporation, thereby earning direct financial benefits.

Already, 187 consumers have earned a total of Rs. 53,514 by selling excess electricity, which has been directly credited to their bank accounts. This has transformed solar power from being merely an environment-friendly initiative into a practical economic opportunity for families, said MD of TSECL.

Basu added that from villages to cities, sparkling solar panels on rooftops across Tripura now speak a new language—the language of development, self-reliance, and a commitment to leaving a cleaner environment for future generations. Besides bringing electricity bills close to zero, the project is also teaching people how to progress while coexisting with natural resources.

Through the ‘Prime Minister Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana’, Tripura has proven that the light of development is not confined to electric poles and wires alone. It also illuminates minds, inspiring dreams of a self-reliant, green, and sustainable future. Just as the state’s skies shine brighter under the sun, so too does the path ahead for Tripura.
