Two drug smugglers arrested with 8,000 Yaba tablets in Budhjungnagar
In a major anti-narcotics operation, police arrested two alleged drug smugglers and seized a large quantity of Yaba tablets from Budhjungnagar in West Tripura district late Sunday night.
According to Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Budhjungnagar Police Station, Prasanta Dey, the incident occurred at the Banikya Choumohani naka point during routine checking. Police personnel noticed a suspicious auto-rickshaw and signalled it to stop. However, the driver, along with two occupants, attempted to flee the spot at high speed.
Acting swiftly, police chased the vehicle and managed to intercept it. While the driver escaped, two persons seated in the rear of the auto-rickshaw were detained on the spot.
A thorough search of the vehicle was later conducted in the presence of a forensic team and an Executive Magistrate. During the search, police recovered four packets of Yaba tablets concealed in secret chambers of the auto-rickshaw.
The seized contraband consisted of a total of 8,000 Yaba tablets. The two detained individuals were subsequently arrested under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
Police have withheld the identities of the accused in the interest of the ongoing investigation. On Monday, both were produced before a local court, where police sought five days’ remand for further interrogation.
