Chicago shooting leaves two teens dead
At least two teens were shot dead during a shooting incident in Chicago's Loop area on Friday (January 26, 2024).
According to the Chicago Fire Department, the incident took place at 16 N. Wabash in downtown Chicago, reports NBC Chicago.
At a press conference Friday afternoon, police were quoted as saying by the news channel that as students were leaving Innovation High School, two vehicles pulled up and several individuals exited before firing multiple shots.
The identities of the teens are not known.
They were pronounced dead when taken to a local hospital.
Witnesses told CBS 2 that they heard two or three shots.
Other witnesses told CBS 2 they saw a car with two people inside drive up, and one of them fired shots out of the window.
The gunman then got out of the vehicle as one of the teens tried to run and shot him three times, the witnesses said.
Each boy was shot in the chest, and the older boy was also shot in the hip. They were rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, and were pronounced dead a short time later, Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Langford was quoted as saying by Xinhua.
Police are investigating the case.
Teenagers have been killed or wounded in shootings in Chicago's downtown area in recent years.
According to local media, two teen boys, also 16 and 17, were shot in the downtown area in April 2023. A year earlier, a 16-year-old boy was shot and killed near the "Bean" sculpture in Millennium Park, Xinhua reported.
