Arsenal-Inspired Eid Look Draws Attention

New York City’s first Muslim mayor arrived at the Eid gathering wearing a thobe featuring Arsenal’s iconic deep blue and red colours, blending faith, culture, and football in a unique style statement.

Mamdani joined residents across the city for Eid al-Adha prayers and celebrations, with pictures and videos from the event quickly going viral on social media.

Mayor Shares Message Of Unity And Sacrifice

Sharing moments from the celebrations on Instagram, Mamdani wrote:

“Today as we honor Prophet Ibrahim, Eid al-Adha reminds us that sacrifice is not a burden. It is an opportunity to see ourselves as part of something larger. To extend a hand to those who need it most.”

The mayor also reiterated his commitment to addressing key issues affecting New Yorkers.

“I am honored to be New York City’s first Muslim Mayor and I am determined to lead through solidarity. Together, we are working to ensure every New Yorker can afford the groceries, housing, and child care they need,” he added.

A known Arsenal supporter, Mamdani’s football-inspired attire drew widespread appreciation online, especially after Arsenal’s Premier League triumph in the 2025-26 season.

One social media user commented, “A soccer kurta jersey is wild. This man is a gift in so many ways. God protect him.”

Who Is Zohran Mamdani?

Zohran Mamdani is an Indian-Ugandan-American progressive politician and former member of the New York State Assembly representing Queens. A Democrat and member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), he is known for advocating affordable housing, public transit reforms, immigrant rights, and economic justice.

Born in Uganda, Mamdani moved to the United States with his family at a young age. He is the son of acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair and noted academic Mahmood Mamdani.

Before entering politics, he worked as a housing counsellor and was also involved in music and activism. Mamdani gained national prominence for his grassroots campaigning style and outspoken progressive politics.

Rise To New York City Mayor

Mamdani entered the New York City mayoral race in 2024 and won the Democratic primary in June 2025, defeating former New York governor Andrew Cuomo.

He later won the general election on November 4, 2025, becoming New York City’s first Muslim and South Asian mayor.

Mamdani officially took office as the 112th Mayor of New York City on January 1, 2026.
