Nobel drama: Trump ready to accept Peace Prize from Machado, committee says ‘not possible’
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has issued a clarification stating that the Nobel Peace Prize cannot be “shared, revoked, or transferred,” after US President Donald Trump said he was ready to accept the laureate if Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado offered it to him.
“The facts are clear and well established. Once a Nobel Prize is announced, it cannot be revoked, shared, or transferred to others. The decision is final and stands for all time,” the Committee said in a statement.
According to reports, Machado recently said she would want to share the prize with the President.
"I certainly would love to be able to personally tell him that we believe, the Venezuelan people, because this is a prize of the Venezuelan people, certainly want to give it to him, and share it with him," Machado told Fox News host Sean Hannity as quoted by Euro News.
Trump recently said that Machado is expected to visit the United States next week.
Speaking to Fox News, he said, “Well, I understand she’s coming in next week sometime, and I look forward to saying hello to her.”
The meeting is expected to take place amid heightened tensions following US involvement in the arrest and extraction of Venezuela’s deposed president, Nicolás Maduro.
Asked by Fox News whether he would accept the Nobel Peace Prize if it were offered to him by the Venezuelan leader, Trump said, “I’ve heard that she wants to do that. That’d be a great honour.”
Trump has repeatedly claimed that he deserved the Nobel Peace Prize last year, crediting himself with ending eight wars during the first eight months of his second term as President.
Meanwhile, the US captured Maduro and brought him to the US for trial for narco-terror conspiracy, among other charges.
