Woman allegedly killed after photo with male friend went viral

Sofia Farooq, a resident of Sarkhej, was allegedly killed after a picture of her with a male friend went viral a few months ago.

Her father, Mohammed Farooq, 56, and brother, Habil Farooq, 38, have been arrested by the police. A murder case has been registered against the two.

Family allegedly staged murder as hit-and-run

According to police, Habil took Sofia to an isolated location near Gheljipura in Sarkhej, where he allegedly attacked her with a hammer before attempting to pass off the incident as a road accident.

Police were initially told that on the night of August 12, Sofia was riding pillion on Habil's motorcycle when another motorcycle allegedly rammed them from behind near Samruddh Dairy.

Sofia, who suffered injuries to the back of her head and legs, was rushed to a hospital, where she was declared dead on August 13.

Police uncover alleged murder plot

During the investigation, police found discrepancies in the accident account and alleged that the father and son had fabricated the story to mislead investigators.

Police further alleged that Habil had concealed an iron hammer in his trousers while taking Sofia to the isolated location.

He allegedly struck her three times with the hammer, while his father, Farooq, assisted him.

The investigation is underway.
