Bengal coal scam: 'Can't fight against me so targeting my family,' says Abhishek Banerjee after wife Rujira stopped at airport
Kolkata/IBNS: Trinamool Congress MP and national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Monday slammed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for allegedly targeting his family for political gains.
Abhishek made the comment after his wife Rujira Narula Banerjee was stopped from boarding the Dubai-bound flight at the Kolkata airport.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned Rujira, who was stopped by the immigration department, two days later for quizzing in connection with the coal pilferage scam.
Accusing the country's ruling BJP of political vendetta, Abhishek said, "They are not able to fight me so they are targeting my wife and children. People, who are watching everything, will give a befitting reply to them."
"They are not able to fight me politically so they are using ED-CBI and trying to frame me in multiple cases. But they are failing.
"I reiterate that I would hang myself to death publicly if they are able to bring any evidence in the public. But we don't have to take lessons of honesty from people who were caught accepting money on television cameras," the the TMC MP said.
Abhishek, who is also the nephew of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accused the saffron party of disrupting the 'Trinamoole Nabojowar Yatra'.
"The BJP is trying to disrupt our Yatra because they don't have people's support. They are using ED-CBI against TMC because we are fighting against the BJP in favour of the people," Abhishek said.
The ED, which probes the financial irregularities, has claimed companies- Leaps and Bound Pvt. Ltd. and Leaps and Bound Management Services LLP- are connected to Abhishek and his family.
The two companies received protection funds from a construction company through the accused who are being probed in the case, the ED has claimed.
Slamming the action against Rujira at the airport, Mamata earlier on Monday said, "She (Rujira) is a Punjabi girl, Her mother is ill... This is inhumanity."
