"Maitri Setu" in Sabroom visited by Indian and Bangladeshi delegates; bridge connection to be operational by June
Sabroom/Tripura: The Friendship Bridge connecting India and Bangladesh, also known as "Maitri Setu," situated in the southern district of Tripura, is likely to become operational by June of next year, suggested Aditya Mishra, the Chairman of the Land Port Authority of India (LPAI) during his visit to Sabroom on Thursday.
A group of five individuals, led by Mustafizur Rahman, the High Commissioner of Bangladesh stationed in Delhi, visited the Bharat-Bangla Maitri Setu in Sabroom.
Among the delegation were Ariful Rahmam, the Foreign Affairs Minister of Bangladesh, AKM Atiqul Haque, the Commerce Minister of Bangladesh, and Arif Mohammad, the High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Agartala.
Aditya Mishra, the Chairman of the Land Port Authority of India, along with Lt. Col. Geetsab, the Director (Technical) of LPAI and other Indian officials involved in the construction of the Integrated Check Post were present, as well as former local MLA Shankar Roy, on India's side.
During their visit to Sabroom, the delegation inspected the ongoing construction work of the Maitri Bridge and Integrated Check Post (ICP), and assessed the status of the project's advancement.
A temporary ICP meeting was held, during which representatives from both countries discussed the progress made so far.
Mustafizur Rahman, the High Commissioner of Bangladesh in Delhi, expressed his admiration for the work being carried out at the Integrated Check Post (ICP) during the meeting between the two countries' representatives.
They also agreed to submit recommendations to their respective foreign ministries in the next two months, regarding allowing the daily travel of 200 to 300 individuals through passports.
It should be noted that the "Maitri Setu" is a 1.9 kilometer-long bridge that connects Sabroom in India to the Chittagong Port in Bangladesh, which is approximately 80 kilometers away.
In March 2021, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the "Maitri Setu" alongside Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
