‘Beef served instead of mutton’! Kolkata YouTuber criticizes Olypub, sparks online debate
Kolkata/IBNS: Bengali YouTuber Sayak Chakraborty has sparked a controversy online, alleging he was served beef instead of mutton by a Muslim waiter at Kolkata’s popular Olypub restaurant.
In a video that went viral on social media, Sayak confronted the waiter, accusing him of deliberately serving beef despite their order for mutton.
“Do you know I was made to eat beef despite being a Brahmin? Will you eat pork being a Muslim? Is this a joke?” he asked, while the restaurant manager stood by.
Sayak, accompanied by two others including a woman, said they had ordered a mutton steak but were served beef instead. “We were not even informed that it was beef!” he exclaimed.
The manager was seen reprimanding the waiter for failing to properly communicate with the customers at the Park Street restaurant-bar.

The video has since been removed from Sayak’s Facebook page but drew mixed reactions. Some criticised Sayak for allegedly making communal remarks, while others condemned serving beef to a Hindu.
Arnab Nandi, who claims to be the former vice president of Rashtriya Hindu Vahini Sangh-Ujjain, wrote, “If this allegation is true, then it is not merely a lapse related to food—it is a serious accusation of hurting religious sentiments and a breach of trust.”
Meanwhile, Tinku Raj commented, “Think about the reverse—if a Muslim were made to consume their forbidden pork, what terrifying consequences would that have caused? By now, the state would have been engulfed in flames!”
Sovik Banerjee described the incident as a “shocking allegation… a deep conspiracy to corrupt religious faith.”
On the other hand, some netizens partially blamed Sayak, noting that Olypub is well-known for beef dishes. Kiran Manna wrote, “He knew beef was available there—yet he went and ate. How reasonable is it to put the entire blame on one person? Mistakes happen at restaurants. Counter mix-ups and service pressure can lead to errors.”
A section of the public has demanded Sayak’s arrest, questioning how he failed to distinguish between beef and mutton.
Mousumi Debnath said, “Hindus eating beef is not a matter of honour. But it is suspicious that someone would eat beef for the first time and not recognise its taste. This seems like a plan to incite riots ahead of elections. Sayak should be arrested immediately for making communal remarks on live broadcast.”
The incident soon took a political turn, with the state’s principal opposition party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), seizing on the controversy to step up its attack on the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress (TMC) government.
BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya described the incident as a “warning” for Hindus in the state, alleging that people could be “force-fed beef” if the TMC returns to power in the 2026 Assembly elections.
Malviya wrote on X, "Like in Bangladesh, Hindus in West Bengal are now being force-fed beef. What we are seeing today are not isolated incidents, they are warnings.
"If Mamata Banerjee and the TMC return to power in 2026, this won’t remain the exception; it will become the norm. It will be brazen, deliberate, and right in our face. This is not about “choice” or “food habits”, this is about trampling upon the faith and beliefs of Hindus with complete impunity."
"At the same time, the Mamata Banerjee administration has utterly failed to clamp down on rampant cow smuggling and illegal slaughter across West Bengal. The message is clear: Hindu sentiments do not matter.
"Hindu Bengalis must wake up. This is about dignity, identity, and self-preservation. Silence today will only invite greater humiliation tomorrow," he added.
