Modi pulls up NDA leaders over ‘lose talk’ after recent controversies

The meeting, centred on the theme of Good Governance, saw the participation of Chief Ministers and Deputy Chief Ministers from NDA-ruled states.

Sources said the Prime Minister flagged concerns over certain remarks made by party leaders in recent weeks, which he felt were uncalled for and damaging. “Avoid speaking anything, anywhere,” he reportedly told the gathering, stressing the importance of maintaining discipline in public discourse, according to an India Today report.

The warning comes on the heels of controversial comments by BJP leaders from Madhya Pradesh and Haryana, which drew sharp backlash and reportedly caused unease within the party.

On "Operation Sindoor", the Prime Minister is understood to have clarified that no external party was involved in the ceasefire decision, which, he said, came in response to a request from Pakistan.

In recent days, BJP leaders have stirred controversy with statements concerning the military operation and the Army itself.

BJP MLA Vijay Shah from Madhya Pradesh sparked outrage with his remarks against Colonel Sofia Qureshi, who was part of the military briefing on Operation Sindoor.

Speaking at a government event, Shah had claimed that the Prime Minister had sent a “sister from the same community” as those in Pakistan to avenge the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir — a comment widely criticised as communal and inflammatory.

Madhya Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Jagdish Devda also triggered criticism after saying that the armed forces should bow to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Senior BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi distanced himself from Shah’s comments, calling him a "fool" and saying he had made himself a “laughing stock.”

The opposition seized upon the remarks, with the Congress describing them as shameful and announcing state-wide protests in response.

Sunday’s NDA meeting, chaired by Modi, also discussed caste-based enumeration and broader governance issues alongside the Operation Sindoor fallout.
