Andrew Holness has led the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) to a third consecutive term in government, marking a historic moment in the nation’s politics. The JLP won 34 of the 63 parliamentary seats, while the opposition People’s National Party (PNP) secured 29.
Holness, 53, celebrated the win by thanking supporters and pledging to continue his government’s focus on economic growth, crime reduction, and social investment. “This victory belongs to the people of Jamaica,” he told a jubilant crowd in Kingston. “We will continue to build a stronger, safer, and more prosperous nation, The Guardian reported.
The election, held on September 3, saw low voter turnout, just under 40 percent, reflecting voter fatigue after years of political rivalry.
Holness’s government has been credited with overseeing a sharp decline in crime, including a 43 percent reduction in murders so far this year, along with economic reforms that reduced Jamaica’s public debt from over 140 percent of GDP in 2013 to just above 70 percent in 2024.
PNP leader Mark Golding conceded defeat, calling for unity while pledging to hold the government accountable.
“We respect the will of the people, and we will continue to serve as a strong opposition,” he said.
Holness, first elected Prime Minister in 2011, is now one of Jamaica’s longest-serving leaders.
With a new mandate secured, Holness has promised to accelerate reforms and deepen investments in infrastructure, housing, and education while keeping Jamaica on a path of stability.
